January Newsletter Clipart

From The Principal,

This is our first newsletter of 2024, and I hope this finds you well.  It is hard to believe we are finishing our first semester and looking toward the second half of the school year.  Our pace tends to pick up a bit during the second semester as our students continue to learn new concepts, but also dig deeper in the application of skills learned. If you do not have a designated daily family reading time, the new year is a great opportunity to make this a habit for your family.  Research tells us that by increasing opportunities with print/books, students benefit in all academic areas of the curriculum. There are SO many reasons to pick up a good book! I encourage you to strive for MORE time spent reading in 2024! On another note, it is a new year, but still the same policy, if I may be of assistance to you in any way, my door is always open!

~Mrs. Isaacs

Kids Heart Challenge
Scott Teays has always been a huge supporter of the American Heart Association, being one of, if not THE, top contributing school in the state of West Virginia year after year. Last year, we placed first in the state raising over $25,000 for the American Heart Association.  Scott Teays will again this year support the American Heart Association and its efforts to improve the health of people everywhere by participating in the Kids Heart Challenge.  We have been reminded this year that heart issues can affect all ages and our goal is to top the $25,000 raised last year!

The challenge will kick off February 1st and run through February 16th.   Visit heart.org/KHC or download the Kids Heart Challenge App and search for our school to sign-up!

Our school-wide event will take place on Friday, February 23rd. If possible, we ask that your child make at least a $5.00 contribution to participate.  Checks should be made payable to The American Heart Association, or AHA.  Donations can also be made online by following the instructions on the collection envelope.  Students receive prizes based on the amount of donations they collect.

A $25 Amazon Gift Card will be presented to the class with the highest percentage of students registered and a $25 Amazon Gift Card will be presented to the class with the highest percentage of students who complete the online task (it is called Finn’s mission).

Valentine’s Day Party
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.  This is a teacher/classroom only party and guests are not invited.  We ask that you adhere to the following:

• When sharing Valentines, please bring one for every child in the classroom.
• Chocolate/and or candy containing nuts is not permitted to accompany Valentines due to allergies and food guidelines.
• We do not accept flower/balloon deliveries due to inadequate space and transportation home.

The end of the year assessment in ELA and Math (West Virginia General Summative Assessment) given to students in grades 3-5 will take place the week of May 6th.  We ask that you avoid scheduling appointments during your child’s assigned testing time if possible.

Inclement Weather/School Closing and Delays Reminder
In the event of a school delay, school closing, or early departure, the automatic calling system will be activated.  PLEASE do not call the school to ask about school closings.  Our lines need to be kept open for emergencies.  You will receive a personal call from School Messenger if we have ANY change of plans.  The following media sites update school closings and delays:

• Putnam County School Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter
https://wvde.state.wv.us/closi...
• Local news channels

In the event of an early departure, teachers will follow the emergency plan you provided them with at the beginning of the school year.  If you no longer remember what that is, please contact your child’s teacher.  Please note:  in the event of an early departure, the YMCA after school program is NOT open.
